Local Volunteer Opportunities

BLOOD SERVICES:

Positions needed: receptionist, donor aid and canteen duties to assist at area blood drives and the New River Valley Donor Center (Tues - Fri). Time: 3 hour shifts as often as weekly or as little as once or twice a year. Blood Services training is provide free and is one hour. Monthly training at NRV Donor Center, 250 South Main Street Suite 200, Blacksburg contact:  951-0363 for schedule.

Volunteers needed to help with Marketing Strategies, including researching donor demographics, if interested contact a Donor Recruitment Specialist, 961-2207. *

DISASTER SERVICES:

Volunteer for local disaster response, train and be on stand-by for larger local disasters, or join in the national disaster response. Work in damage assessment, shelter operations, family services, or disaster health services. Disaster training required and is available free.

INTERNATIONAL SERVICES

Volunteers needed for the International Services Committee. Training is free and duties include outreach and education to the public of the International Red Cross Movement, and International Humanitarian Law, working as a tracing caseworker; assisting with various annual events: booth at International Street Fair, promoting World Red Cross Day in May.

HEALTH & SAFETY:

Instructors for First Aid and CPR. The more instructors available, the more classes can be offered to make the community a safer place. HIV/AIDS instructors are also needed to help educate on disease prevention. Time commitment: teach 2-3 classes per year. Instructor training required.

OFFICE VOLUNTEERS

Volunteers needed as receptionists, filing, data entry, assist with mailings, and special projects-including community event planning. Prefer volunteers who can give 3-4 hours one day per week for continuity.

Volunteers (5-10) needed to complete Community Awareness Telephone Survey for the chapter, to measure the community’s awareness and perception of the Red Cross, the chapter, the services of the chapter and its ‘presence’ in the community . Prefer those familiar with public opinion survey methods and techniques or interested in applying research and survey knowledge. *

 Need individuals to assist in Communications to with newsletter, news releases for special events, disaster media events or chapter activities; time will vary with your involvement.*

 Financial Development volunteers are needed to assist with the chapter fund raising activities.

 Volunteers needed to assist with Volunteer Management, scheduling volunteer training, data management, and volunteer recognition program.*
