Red Cross honors community's 'real heroes'

By Sheree Jones

Heroes come in all shapes and sizes. Some have it written into their job descriptions, some spend their lives dedicated to the idea of helping others, and some just do the right thing at the most needed moment.

The Montgomery-Floyd Chapter of the American Red Cross will come together this week to honor some of the "real heroes" in this community, each of whom has made an impact in their own unique way.

The local chapter of the Red Cross will honor the heroes at a breakfast and awards ceremony on Thursday, May 10, at Custom Catering in Blacksburg. Tickets for the event are $25 and are available at the Red Cross office at 712 N. Main St. in Blacksburg. For more information, call 443-3606, or visit the Red Cross web site at www.redcrossnrv.org .

The following individuals will be honored:

Kauffman is an employee of the Montgomery County school system. She went out of her way to directly assist a family who lost their home due to a fire the Sunday after Thanksgiving last year. After the Red Cross assisted the family, Kauffman coordinated and provided additional services for the family, which included helping them acquire a new home.

McClellan and her husband provided foster and respite care for a number of children. She also organized and coordinated an "Angel tree" project for needy students at her school. She wrapped and delivered each gift herself. She also sponsored the most needy child and the child's family by providing them all with gifts.

McFarland worked at Montgomery Regional Hospital as a security guard. He died in the line of duty as he was fatally wounded on Aug. 19, 2006, while coming to the aid of a deputy sheriff who had been attacked by a prisoner who was escaping from custody. Sutphin, a deputy sheriff with the Montgomery County Sheriff's Department, was shot and killed the next day on Aug. 20, 2006, while taking part in the manhunt for the escaped prisoner.

While driving home from work on Route 100, Dalton came upon a car wreck with bystanders yelling about a baby still inside the vehicle. Dalton rushed to the vehicle, where she found a baby seat flipped over on the floorboard. Acting immediately, she cut the seatbelt and freed the infant from the wreckage.

Editor's note: Sheree Jones is a public relations intern with the Montgomery-Floyd Chapter of the American Red Cross.
